Success Is Not An Accident

How are you going to achieve success this year?

MVP! MVP! MVP! MVP!

These are the chants all athletes dream of hearing. They are the chants that motivate athletes to be the best they can be. They are the chants that recognize YOU as the most valuable player.

Who could have possibly foreseen that Stephen Curry – once a scrawny 16 year old, 160 pound, barely- 6- foot, relatively unathletic basketball player – would grow up to be recognized as ‘The NBA’s most unguardable player,’ ‘The best shooter on the planet,’ the NBA’s MVP for the 2014-2015 season and NBA playoff champion. Recently, Stephen Curry has seen unparalleled success in the NBA, and arguably amongst all other superstar athletes.

Was it luck? Was it an accident? No! Singularly, it was Stephen Curry’s desire and drive to succeed.

Several years ago, the first-ever Kobe Bryant Nike Skills academy was held. This was a world-class basketball camp, as only the top 20 high school guards and the top 10 college guards were invited. Among those invited was Stephen Curry who was barely paid attention to. The amount of times he had heard the phrase, “You’re not good enough,” was unimaginable. Funny enough, however, despite competing against the top players in the world, he stood out as the most impressive player at the camp.

Curry had a tireless work ethic!

Repetition. Perfection. Devotion. Stephen Curry would not stop working until he knew he had worked the hardest. He turned all of the negative feedback he received into personal motivation.

Here is a quote from a trainer who attended that camp:

“Now at those skills academies, we’d have two workouts a days for three straight days. Thirty minutes before every single workout, most players were still in their flip-flops and would have on their headphones. But Stephen Curry had already started doing some form shooting. He’d already started taking game shots from game spots in game situations. By the time the workout officially started he’d probably already made 100-150 shots, almost in a full sweat.”

Stephen Curry developed the right habits so he could attain his goals. He is a true testament to the quote, “It’s not the size of the dog in the fight, it’s the size of fight in the dog.”

Everyone can learn a lesson from Stephen Curry’s inspiring journey to success. Ask yourself: Are the habits that you have today on par with the dreams you have for tomorrow? This is something you need to ask yourself every single day. What you do on a daily and regular basis today, will determine where you will be tomorrow.

So what are you waiting for? It’s a new school year, make the most of it!
