Senior Basketball: From Boys to Men

It’s December and Basketball season has hit the ground running. Unlike the last two years where the Collingwood’s Senior Boys Basketball team had to practice off-campus and only play in away games, the 2014-2015 team is blessed to play in a state of the art triple size gym.

The benefits of the new gym including being able to host home games, have more practice times, and host the well-known Cavs Classic, an event the entire school is eagerly anticipating the return of in January! It is evident that having to compromise, adjust, and stay positive for two years was definitely worth it!

Not only does this team have an impressive home court, this year’s Senior Boys Basketball team is projected to be the best squad in Collingwood history. Grade 11 starter, Jaden Narwal, states that: “ I think if we come together and play as team we have a good shot at competing for the Provincial Championship”.

Recently at the ISA Championships, the Senior Boys beat AAA squad St George’s in a thrilling game that involved being down by double digits in the first half, coming back and leading by seven points, and letting Saints tie the game with thirty seconds left on the clock. In the end, the team was able to come together and defeat Saints by a score of 77-74.

On their journey to victory, Collingwood also beat top ranked AA team SMUS as well as Brentwood College. This tournament was a true testament to the ability of the squad. As well, it was the first the Cavaliers have won the ISA’s in Collingwood School’s history.

Although Collingwood is only currently given an honorable mention in the AA rankings, this ranking does not reflect on the abilities and powers of the team as evidenced by the results in the ISA champions.

As well, Collingwood was able to defeat AA opponent Southridge in a scrimmage earlier in the season and only loss to top AAAA school, Terry Fox by a small margin.

Upcoming tournaments include the Okana-Quen tournament in Oliver and the North Shore Invitational. Collingwood will also be hosting West Vancouver Highlanders for an exhibition game on December 15th and play their first league game against Elphinstone on December 18th. It will sure be an eventful season for the Cavaliers!
