Warning: this movie is a serious tear-jerker! Fruitvale Station is an American drama biopic written and directed by Ryan Coogler. It is an extremely emotional, real-life tragedy of the death-by-cop and final hours of Oscar Grant. Based on a true story, the film focuses on Oscar Grant, a young African-American father living in San Francisco. After spending a brief sentence in prison, Grant is trying to change and turn his life around for his girlfriend and their child. On New Years Day, 2009, Grant was brutally and appallingly shot down by BART officers.
Grant’s death was caught on camera by a fellow subway passenger. The video went live and news of Grant’s unjustified murder spread around North America like wildfire. Fruitvale Station depicts present day racism and brings awareness to a truly tragic story. It won the Independent Spirit Award for Best Feature Film, is rated four stars on IMBD, and 94% on Rotten Tomatoes. Fruitvale Station is for mature audiences only as it is graphic and depicts real-life racism.
Produced by Forest Whitaker, the film stars Michael B. Jordan who gave an emotional performance. More importantly, Fruitvale Station is a true eye opener to real world issues. So, if you’re looking for a movie to watch this Winter Break, I recommend giving Fruitvale Station
